If you’re a member of a Plex Home, you can use this option to have the app automatically sign in to the last used user and bypass any PIN for that user.

Cinema Trailers

The cinema trailers setting controls how many cinema trailers will play before a movie. Source settings can be controlled through Plex Media Server.

Screen Saver

The screen saver setting controls the timeout before the screen saver begins. Note that this is independent from the system.

Auto Play

When the Post Play screen is presented after playback, choose whether an “up next” video should be played automatically after a short countdown.

Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections

When enabled, it means that this device is allowed to make insecure connections to a Plex Media Server if secure connections fail. Available choices:

• Never – (Default) Never fall back to insecure connections without specific action from the user
• On same network as server – Allow fallback, but only when Plex Media Player and the Plex Media Server are on the same network
• Always – Always allow fallback

Layout

• Auto– Allows the app to switch between desktop and TV layout.
• TV – Locks the TV layout and does not automatically switch to desktop mode.

Full Screen

The Full Screen toggle controls whether the app is rendered in full screen or windowed. On OS X, this may result in better results than the full screen window control.

Update Channel

The Update Channel setting lets the user control which update channel the app is subscribed to. Most users will want to leave this set to Stable, but other channels can receive early preview releases depending on the user’s permission level.

Setting up Plex on Kodi

The Plex Kodi addon needs just a bit of configuration before you can begin streaming the media on your Plex server to your Kodi device. You’ll need to link your Plex account before you can browse your media libraries.

Select the Plex Kodi addon from the Addons menu, then click it to launch the addon.

Next, click the Sign in button to begin associating your Plex account with this device.

Take note of the code displayed on your screen, then open your browser and go to https://plex.tv/link.

Next, log in to Plex however you prefer.

Then type in the code you were given by the Plex Kodi addon and click the Link button to associate the device with your account.

You’ll see a green check if your device has been associated correctly.

Now open Kodi and you’ll see your Plex content displayed on the screen. The addon is configured and ready to use.

Владельцам сетевых хранилищ я бы также посоветовал выполнить настройку DNS до установки PlexConnect.

Теперь отправляемся в Настройки –> Основные, выделяем пункт «Отправлять данные в Apple» и нажимаем кнопку Play/Pause на пульте. Выбираем пункт «Добавить профиль». В поле ввода вносим:

После применения настройки профиль добавится к списку сертификатов.

Важно! Если при добавлении профиля сертификата у вас возникает какая-либо ошибка (например, код 109), то почти наверняка вам необходимо проверить настройки брандмауера (firewall)

Preparation

Before You Begin

Before you begin installing Plex Media Server, it’s strongly recommended that you check that your media collection has been named and organized in a way that Plex will understand. If not, you may notice content isn’t recognized, is mis-matched, or not found at all.

You may already be naming and organizing your media files in a way suitable for Plex. Here are the important things:

• Movies are gathered together in a “Movies” type folder, TV Shows in a “TV Shows” type folder, etc.

• Movies are named as follows:

• TV Show episodes are named with the season and episode:

• TV Show episodes are stored in their own folder as follows:

• For TV shows, the folder structure can be very important. Make sure you have show folders that contain season folders that contain the episodes

Tip!: It’s important to understand that Plex Media Server does not have its own graphical user interface. When you run the server on your computer, NAS, or other device, you won’t see a window open with a “server UI” or similar. Instead, you use the Plex Web App to manage your server.

Download the Installer

The Plex Media Server can be downloaded for free from the Plex Downloads page. There are many platforms available:

• Compatible NAS devices

From the Downloads page, choose the platform or device you need, and download the installer.

Get a Plex (Player) App

While you’re on the Downloads page, you may wish to download a player app as well. The server includes the browser-based Plex Web App, but you’ll probably want to download an app for other devices. There are many available:

• Windows/macOS Desktop PCs: Plex for Windows, Plex for macOS, or Plex Media Player (primarily intended for HTPC usage)
• Mobile Devices: Android, iOS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TIDAL free to all Plex users?

No. Access to TIDAL requires a subscription to the TIDAL service, which can be purchased through Plex (or elsewhere, though you won’t necessarily enjoy some of the Plex benefits if you purchase elsewhere). It is not a free service. You can start a free TIDAL trial to try things out.

How do I start a TIDAL subscription with Plex?

To start a new TIDAL subscription on a free Plex account (or to add one to a Plex account that already has a Plex Pass subscription), you can visit our main TIDAL page. As part of the sign up process, you’ll get redirected to the TIDAL site to create an account there and confirm that you want to link/authorize Plex.

Do I need a Plex Pass subscription?

A Plex Pass subscription is not required to use TIDAL.

If you do already have a Plex Pass subscription, then you’ll automatically get a discount on the TIDAL subscription for being a Plex Pass subscriber, when signing up through us.

Do I need a Plex Media Server to use TIDAL?

Nope! If you have a TIDAL subscription linked to your Plex account, you can access TIDAL content in a supported app, regardless of whether you have your own Plex Media Server or not.

However, if you do run your own server and have a music library, then you’ll enjoy extra integration with TIDAL such as albums for an artist that are available on TIDAL, but missing from your library.

If I link/add a TIDAL subscription to my account, is it shared with other users?

Having a TIDAL subscription linked to a Plex account is a 1:1 relationship. The Plex account to which it is linked will have access to TIDAL content. Shared accounts (including Plex Home members) will not have access to TIDAL.

If you already have a “Family Premium” or “Family HiFi” TIDAL plan through TIDAL, you can link to a different Plex account for each of the available TIDAL members. (See information on how to link to an existing subscription in our article.)

How many apps can stream from TIDAL at the same time?

As with subscriptions through TIDAL itself, you can use a single device/app to stream from TIDAL at any one time. If you’re already streaming some TIDAL music on your Plex for Android mobile app, for instance, you won’t be able to also stream TIDAL content on your Apple TV’s Plex app at the same time.

Are TIDAL subscriptions through Plex the same as elsewhere?

A TIDAL subscription through Plex will be identical to one purchased elsewhere (such as through TIDAL itself). However, there are a few TIDAL features that are only available when using official TIDAL apps (or the TIDAL website) and are not available through partners’ apps, such as Plex.

• While the HiFi plan does have access to lossless quality music in Plex, it does not have access to “master-quality” (MQA) music when played through Plex.
• You cannot download TIDAL music to Plex mobile apps for TIDAL’s “Offline Mode”. (This also applies to our own Mobile Sync feature; it is not possible to sync TIDAL content.)
• You cannot purchase music from TIDAL through Plex.

All of these features are available when using supported official TIDAL apps directly, but not when accessing TIDAL through partner apps, such as our Plex apps.

Can I use Mobile Sync with TIDAL content?

The ability to download TIDAL music is not available to partners such as Plex. That means that it is not possible to download/sync TIDAL content using our Mobile Sync feature, sorry.

How do I migrate to TIDAL if I already use ?

If you already use another streaming music service, then chances are that you have lots of playlists and favorites that you wouldn’t want to lose. Luckily, you can use a service like Soundiiz to transfer that music data from your old streaming music service to TIDAL!

3. Completing Plex Media Server Setup

The Setup Wizard

The Setup Wizard should be running. It will lead you through a short series of steps to perform actions like naming your server and setting up your media libraries.

Setting Up Libraries and Adding Media

When the asks you to set up libraries, it means you are organizing your media collections for Plex. As we mentioned earlier in this article, there are five types of libraries you can set up for your media (movies, TV shows, music, photos, and home videos) and Plex uses your file and folder data to match content and then gather awesome metadata for it. For files you have ripped or purchased (without digital rights management)—like movies, TV shows, or music—the metadata, filenames, and folders are usually organized well enough for Plex to enhance correctly, without any issues or need to correct. There are also ways to correct any issues, and they are outlined in the media preparation guide.

We suggest, at this point, that you prepare a test folder for each media type, add libraries, and see how it looks in Plex. Try some movies, TV shows, home videos, music, and photos. You can always go back and update the library, delete it, recreate libraries, or start over with a new library.

This test will give you a sense for the organization and labeling you want. Then, you can decide how you want your libraries grouped and named. For example, you may want to go ahead and add well organized folders to various libraries right away, and then put a bunch of unorganized files and folders into another library—these might be named “Summer Beach Trip 2014 Photos” and “Unorganized 2014 Photos.”

Note: Video content purchased from online stores such as iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon will typically be protected by DRM (digital rights management) and cannot legally be played in other systems such as Plex.

Subtitles

Placement

The Subtitle Placement setting controls the location where subtitles are displayed on the screen when supported and enabled. The user can choose between Lower left, Lower right, Lower middle (the default), Upper left, Upper right, and Upper middle.

Color

The Subtitle Color setting allows the user to specify the color that subtitles are displayed in. They can choose between Light grey, Blended light grey, Yellow, Light yellow, and Blended light yellow.

Size

The Subtitle Size setting controls which preset size subtitles are rendered at: Tiny, Small, Normal, Large, and Huge.

Жизнь до PLEX

5 лет назад в моем распоряжении оказалось два медиаплеера Western Digital TV Live (WDTV Live gen 2). Подключив к одному плееру внешний жесткий диск 2.5”, можно было поделиться коллекцией для всех остальных устройств в сети. Оба устройства были подключены к роутеру по сети Ethernet, доступ к файлам осуществлялся по протоколу SMB.

Схема с двумя плеерами рабочая, но есть недостатки:

1. Регулярные подвисания плееров.
2. Переиндексация коллекции. Запускается при перезагрузке или подключении диска. Во время индексации блокируется доступ на проигрывание, время индексации занимает продолжительное время.
3. Неудобное пополнение коллекции. Добавить новый фильм можно двумя способами: отсоединить диск от плеера, подключить к компьютеру или загрузить фильм на сетевой диск.

Схема с просмотром видео устраивала “на троечку”, но предстояло реализовать поддержку домашней коллекции музыки. Задумался о централизации хранилища — переносе всего содержимого на NAS.

Wi-Fi маршрутизатором был выбран MikroTik RB951G-2HnD, в качестве NAS хранилища — Synology DS215j. Медиаплееры WDTV Live. Стереосистему подключил к сети через Airport Express MC414RS/A по протоколу Airplay.

Synology предлагает доступ к разным сервисам: DLNA-сервер, видео-сервер, аудио-станция, фото-станция и пр. Штатные приложения работают достаточно хорошо, регулярно обновляются, есть iOS клиенты. А внешний вид приложения и взаимодействие с пользователем на любителя.

Через менеджер пакетов есть возможность установить приложения от сторонних разработчиков. Выбор медиа-серверов небольшой, но среди них есть PLEX Media Server.

PLEX Media Server — очень простой и красивый медиа-сервер, с поддержкой разных коллекций контента: фотографии, фильмы, видео, музыка.

Сервер PLEX существует для большинства платформ (macOS, Windows, Linux, NAS), но для полноценной работы требуется мощный процессор.

Что мне разонравилось в Synology:

• для каждого сервиса (музыка, фильмы) требуется отдельное приложение;
• все штатные приложения значительно отличаются друг от друга;
• слабый процессор, даже для работы штатных приложений(docker, mail server), которые анонсировали в Synology OS 6.

Для нормальной работы PLEX на Synology потребуется хорошее устройство, серии Play или Plus. В моем распоряжении была бюджетная модель 215j, с процессором ARM 700mhz. Для стриминга файлов (без транскодирования) этого достаточно, но если хочется больше возможностей — необходимо другое железо.

После ограниченного знакомства с PLEX, привычный ритм жизни перестал быть спокойным. Началась подготовка к переходу на более мощное железо.

We have official Plex Media Server releases available for the following Linux Distributions:

• CentOS 7 or newer
• Debian 8 or newer

FreeBSD

Plex Media Server releases are available for FreeBSD 11.2 or newer.

Note: If running in a FreeBSD “jail”, you’ll want to make sure that VNET is enabled. (For instance, FreeNAS has instructions.)

CPU

CPU requirements can vary dramatically, depending on how exactly you want to use Plex, which particular Plex apps you’ll be using, properties of your media, how many people will be using Plex at the same time, and more.

As a minimum, we recommend:

Intel Core i3 (or equivalent) or faster

Note: While Plex Media Server can install and run on a computer with a slower processor, you might not have a very good experience, depending on your usage.

Generally, any modern computer should meet that minimum. However, if you will have multiple people accessing content simultaneously and you’ll sometimes require transcoding of content during playback, then you may well need something faster than the minimum.

If your computer’s CPU is not powerful enough to keep up with transcoding your media, you will notice pausing or buffering as the app waits for the server to catch up. We have additional information to help you figure out what kind of processor you might need for your own particular usage.

In general, Plex Media Server doesn’t require large amounts of RAM. 2GB of RAM is typically more than sufficient and some installs (particularly Linux-based installs) can often happily run with even less. Of course, more RAM won’t hurt you and will certainly be helpful if you’re also doing other things on the computer.
